RMC Green Team

Background

The RMC Green Team was founded in 2005 in order to provide multi-disciplinary support to DND and the CAF with respect to sustainable management of infrastructure and the environment.  Today, the team is co-directed by Dr. E. Maria Skordaki (Water / Environment) and Dr. Nicholas Vlachopoulos (Infrastructure) and includes approximately twenty scholars, researchers and subject matter experts, along with their associated networks.  The RMC Green Team continues to make a difference by providing expert advice and conducting studies for the military community and other Federal Government agencies in the realms of environmental risk assessments, energy, sustainability, real property and resource management.

The group has worked at 120+ locations across Canada and won multiple awards.  Of note is their prestigious Deputy Minister/Chief of the Defence Staff Innovation Award for their  “leadership and contributions in the areas of energy efficiency, water treatment and waste management.”  The RMC Green Team primarily conducts nation-wide, multi-year programs that are strategic in nature.  As a long-standing research group, it has created and maintained a rich and comprehensive database on DND/CAF issues that functions as a substantial resource regarding optimization of processes, avoiding duplication of efforts and providing quality management in DND and CAF projects.

The RMC Green Team provides a unique approach in conducting its projects by establishing service level agreements  with its sponsors and working with them at every step of the project in order to ensure the desired outcomes.  The group is known not only for their technical expertise but also for their research-based approach of monitoring, assessment, characterization data interpretation and analysis with a view to optimizing management, administration, operations and maintenance at all levels within CAF and DND.

The RMC Green Team has a research concentration in addition to the projects carried out for their sponsors.  The group, through their rich database, has provided research materials and supported multiple Undergraduate, Master’s and PhD programs for RMC Officer Cadets, CAF Officers and civilians.  The team has also 200+ publications in peer-reviewed Journals, Conferences, Governmental Reports and technical magazines.  The team has also been very successful in obtaining funding through industrial sources as well as research grants by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Mitacs advanced research and training programs, and the Canadian Defence Academy Research Program (CDARP).
