Sophie Bastien has been teaching for thirty years and joined RMC in 2004, after working at Trent University (Peterborough) and the Université de Montréal, where she received her PhD in 2002.

Most of her specialized courses focus on 20th-century French literature: the dramatic and narrative genres, and the Surrealist and Absurdist movements. She also teaches poetry: French poetry from the Middle Ages, Quebec poetry from its origins, and 20th-century poetry in French. As for her survey courses, they address literature in France since the 17th century and in Quebec since the 19th century.

Her monograph Caligula et Camus. Interférences transhistoriques won in 2007 the Canadian Association of University French Professors Award. She also co-edited three collections of essays : La Passion du théâtre. Camus à la scène (Amsterdam, Rodopi, 2011), Le Surréalisme et les arts du spectacle (Lausanne, L’Âge d’homme, 2014), and Camus, l’artiste (Presses universitaires de Rennes, 2015). She is the guest editor of a special issue, entitled La Scène surréaliste, published in  L’Annuaire théâtral (59) in 2016.

Melusine

Her numerous articles and the seven colloquia that she co-organized deal with Albert Camus, surrealism, theatre and film studies, or Quebec literature.

She has served as an adjudicator for federal and provincial granting agencies, international journals, scholarly associations, and universities in Canada, the USA, and abroad. She also is an active member of significant professional associations, and was the president of the Société québécoise d’études théâtrales (SQET) from 2015 to 2018.
