The Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP) is a residential program. Officer cadets are required to live on campus for the duration of their studies and use the dining services, regardless of their marital status.
-
Are there opportunities for my N/OCdt to partake in extracurricular activities or clubs?
RMC Athletics offers a diverse range of opportunities for extracurricular activities and clubs. At the provincial level, we field seven teams in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA), and at the national level, we hold full memberships in U SPORTS. Approximately 200 athletes participate across our seven Varsity Teams, which include Men’s and Women’s Fencing, Men’s Hockey, Men’s Rugby, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, and Men’s and Women’s Volleyball. Participation in these teams requires annual try-outs, and you must be a full-time RMC student to be eligible. Find more info here Varsity Sports.
In addition to Varsity Teams, Varsity Clubs provide enhanced training and competitive opportunities for RMC students. Similar to the Varsity Teams, these clubs hold annual try-outs, and full-time RMC student status is required for participation. Unlike Varsity Teams, Varsity Clubs do not compete in the OUA or U SPORTS; instead, they participate in tournaments and championships organized by their respective provincial or national governing bodies. Approximately 160 athletes are involved in our seven Varsity Clubs: Judo, Rowing, Running, Sailing, Swimming, Women's Rugby, and Taekwondo.
Recreation Clubs are created and organized by Officer Cadets with the primary goal of providing leadership opportunities for students. These clubs also foster social skills and introduce various
leisure and athletic activities to the RMC community that may not be available through varsity or intramural programs. While at least 51% of a club's membership must consist of Officer Cadets, RMC professors, PSP, and CANEX staff are encouraged to join any clubs of interest and support Officer Cadet initiatives. Community members are also welcome to participate, although their involvement cannot exceed 20% of a club's total membership.
Active clubs for the 2024-25 academic year include Air and Space, Bilingualism, Chess, Climbing, Debate and International Affairs Society, Expedition, Photography, Spikeball, Sport Parachuting, Multi-Sport, War Games, and Windsurfing. Find more info here: Recreation Clubs.
-
Can I tour the RMC site?
Yes. Tours can be arranged through Liaison Services.
Can I plan a trip with my N/OCdt during the next break?
Yes, cadets may submit leave passes for weekend leave and for identified leave periods. Cadets are provided periods of firm leave dates at the start of the year to include Thanksgiving Study Break, Winter Holidays/New Years, and Spring Break.
Can N/OCdts have access to a telephone at all times?
Yes, however, it is each person's responsibility to make the necessary arrangements and pay for a phone line. Internet access is provided in residences as well as in computer labs.
Will my N/OCdt have a break during the summer?
During the summer, N/OCdts continues their military training, which may include basic qualification courses, trade training, specialization training, internships, etc. Generally, cadets have a few weeks of vacation during the summer. There are a select few cadets who, due to having extensive summer courses and returning early for varsity training, will not get more than a few days of leave over the summer.
- What security measures are in place to ensure the safety of students?
Access to the site is controlled by a security team. Buildings at the Royal Military College of Canada are only accessible with a magnetic card. Military police ensure safety on campus. In the evening, on-duty personnel conduct regular patrols to ensure the safety and order of N/OCdts. These include a Cadet Duty Officer, Training Wing Duty Officer (TWDO), and Officer of the Day who are on call and on campus 24/7 for emergencies. The TWDO number is posted on every Squadron’s board and conducts rounds during the day and evening.
What health services are available to students?
N/OCdts have direct access to a medical clinic on campus, available five days a week, even without an appointment. The clinic includes a pharmacy and a laboratory.
Are students required to pursue a military career after graduation?
After entering the second year of studies at RMC, cadets are contractually obliged to serve a period of Obligatory Service, the length of which is variable depending on their entry plan and academic program. Any member of the CAF including cadets with obligatory service may request a Voluntary Release; however, cadets under a period of obligatory service will need to pay back for their pay, education, and other costs during their time as a N/OCdt. The first year of studies is a ‘grace period’ of sorts to enable cadets to make a clear decision before continuing in the CAF without financial commitment.

- How can I obtain a storage cage in my building?
Cadets need to go to the Accommodations Office in the basement of Yeo Hall to sign for a cage in their name. This should be coordinated through their Squadron Warrant Officer. - Do practices with my varsity sports team take priority over academics?
Varsity students and other clubs/teams can request approval to be absent from class to attend tournaments, games, etc. This is common place and generally not an issue. That being said, a student who is in poor academic standing could expect to be denied these requests from their professors and Chain of Command in order to safeguard their graduation chances. - Am I allowed to park on campus?
The RMC Peninsula is a small area with many inhabitants. 4th year cadets have dedicated parking on the peninsula though it is limited to a 1st come, 1st served basis. The remainder of the Cadet Wing parks across the road (once registered with RMC Parking Services) beside the White Dome. This has a 5-10 minute walk to campus.
